How to deep clean your yoga mat this winter
Every yoga class we are moving, sweating and resting on our yoga mat. They become the foundation of our practice, it all starts and ends with our mat! So having a good quality mat kept in good condition is crucial for making our practice feel good and allow us to flow with grace, ease and good hygiene!
If your yoga mat is machine washable you can of course just fold it up and pop it in the wash! If not, here are some natural ways you can make sure your mat stays clean, smell fresh and keep its grip. All without having to use any harsh or unnatural chemicals.
Lemon Juice – The acid in lemons is a great natural antibacterial scrub for wiping down your yoga mat with. Mix lemon juice with water and pop it in a spritz bottle to spray and wipe down your mat after classes. It will help to bring out sweat and grease marks and keep your mat smelling clean. The lemon scent will help to invigorate and uplift your mood too!
Tea Tree and Lavender - Tea Tree is a natural antibacterial and has antifungal properties, mixing Tea Tree oil with water and Lavender Oil will keep your mat clean, and you feeling calm. Lavender provides a calming and relaxing scent that will soothe mind and body every time you come to your mat to take a child's pose.
White Vinegar - Use White Vinegar to strip back grease and germs from your mat. Mix with water and use a microfibre cloth to wipe the mix over the surface. Leave it to sit for 5 minutes and then wipe the mat down again with water. You can use a few drops of your favourite essential oil to help mask the smell of vinegar.
Don’t forget to let your mat air out naturally too. Roll it out and hang it out on a nice day to give it some fresh air.
