In this weeks Meet The Brand we’re talking all things skin care with Anna, co-founder of UpCircle!
Firstly Anna, what was the inspiration to start UpCircle?
The idea for our brand came about when we discovered that even small coffee shops were producing coffee waste per day that they had to pay the council to have it removed and disposed of on landfill sites. Throughout my teenage years I wanted to be a makeup artist so always had a keen interest in beauty and skincare. I knew that coffee had loads of great skincare benefits, so… lightbulb moment! Why not repurpose the coffee into sustainable circular skincare products? We began our journey collecting coffee grounds from one coffee shop, we now collect from 100 coffee houses across London – our list is always growing!
Do you have a favourite item within UpCircle - if so, what is it?
My answer to this changes all the time… At the moment, during this lockdown, I haven’t been wearing any makeup which I’ve quite enjoyed. I’m keeping my skincare routine simple and functional - but having to combat the effects of the tiredness and stress that come with such a period of uncertainty (and endless working!) Therefore, I’d have to say that the product I’m loving most right now is our eye cream. It helps to keep my eyes from appearing tired or puffy and it smells like a maple latte! The cucumber extract in the cream also soothes and firms the skin around my eyes. It’s a real skin saviour product overall!
Where do you see UpCircle in 5 years?
Our intention is to keep on innovating. At the moment we’re looking at how we can begin rescuing flower petals from local florists to turn into beautiful fragrant bath products. Growing our team is also something that excites me greatly. With each new member we have a new wave of excitement, passion and personality. We hired our first ever staff member in 2019 and became a team of eight in 2020. This year we’ve already welcomed a further three people to our team – crazy!
Since launching we’ve expanded our repurposed ingredient portfolio to ten by-products from varied industries, including the argan, tea, juice, date, olive and wood industries. For example, this year we began repurposing residual fruit waters leftover after the creation of juice concentrates. Our product launches for 2021 include an ocean-friendly SPF, a Hand Wash, Hand Lotion and Hand Sanitiser Trio which we plan to launch widely into restaurants and hotels as they reopen. We’re also developing a Night Cream and Lip Balm – all set to launch this year.
Do you have a favourite way to practice self-care - if so, what is it?
It’s important to figure out your non negotiables so that you can make sure you’re ticking the self-care boxes that you, as an individual, need. For me, time with my friends and family is crucial to my happiness so I always try to weave my work life around that. William and I work together to ensure that we support each other so that our personal lives and our out of work priorities are unaffected – it’s one of the major perks of owning a business with a family member.
I live next to a park, so when I get in I like to go for a jog around the park just to unwind. Running allows me time to think - and makes me feel amazing when I’m done! It’s my favourite form of exercise (although I am also partial to a spin class too!)
Finally, what does wellness mean to you?
For me it means maintaining balance in life and making sure you’re looking after yourself. Your overall “wellness” is a balance across several categories, be it physical, emotional, intellectual etc. For me personally social wellness is also very important. It’s important for your general happiness that you make sure that all your wellness categories are topped up! Don’t let one take all the focus so that the rest suffer. That’s how I view wellness as a whole.
That concludes our interview with Anna, and we can’t wait for their new products to be launched! In the meantime, don’t miss your chance to win our £150 giveaway featuring the Coffee Face Scrub from upCircle.
