Spiced Turmeric Latte Recipe

The anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric have been known for centuries and used for as long in eastern medicine thanks to the natural healing qualities. Over the past few years, the bright yellow spice has moved from it’s staple home in most curries to different types of drinks. Most cafes now serve a version of golden milk, m*lk, mylk, liquid gold, golden latte or however they want to describe it, which is, in fact, a turmeric latte.


There are many varieties of the base that gets blended with steamed milk and provides what can only be described as a hug in a mug, but the basis is generally the same. The combination of turmeric, ginger and cinnamon would be the minimum to begin a turmeric latte, but is better enjoyed with a splash of sweetness and a dash of vanilla to elevate the flavour.


I’ve spent years drinking variations of the stuff, but have also managed to perfect my ideal version of the perfect autumnal alternative to just another coffee. It’s packed with a punch and seasoned with an extra kick to give me a natural energy boost when I’m caffeine’d out. My secret ingredient is a pinch of cayenne, but be careful not to overdo it as it’ll turn from a welcomed burst of spice to a tickle in the back of your throat very quickly!


Feel free to switch out to the milk of your choice, but my preference is unsweetened almond milk as it’s the most neutral flavoured dairy-free alternative in my opinion, but also works well with oat milk (may require less sweetener) or coconut milk which really changes up the whole flavour profile.


Serves two:


400ml Almond Milk 

1 tsp Ground Turmeric

¼ tsp Ground Ginger

¼ tsp Allspice

1 Cinnamon Stick

2 Cardamom Pods

½ tsp Vanilla Extract

1 tsp Maple Syrup or Honey

Pinch of Cayenne Pepper

Pinch of Cracked Black Pepper

Rose Petals for Garnish


Start by combining the turmeric, ginger and allspice in a little ramekin, then pour your almond milk into a pan and add this spice mix. Stir, then add the cinnamon stick and two cardamom pods that have been lightly crushed. Mix in the vanilla, the sweetener and bring to a gentle simmer.


Whisk vigorously and be careful not to bring the mixture to a full boil. It’ll only take a couple of minutes, then pour into two mugs. Add a pinch of cayenne, a grind of black pepper and a sprinkle of rose petals then enjoy, feeling the warmth run through your body!
