The History of the Zodiac

We all love a good horoscope and seeing what the stars say is on the cards for us.  But where do star signs come from and what is the history of the zodiac?  We're taking it back to find out where horoscopes came from, and what's the science behind the stars?

In the beginning of the study of Astrology, the stars were used to learn about different celestial events, to predict the reoccurrence of the seasons and the weather.  This was so farmers knew when to plant their crops to reap the best harvest.

The Zodiac

The Zodiac is derived from the Greek word meaning 'circle of animals.'  Early astrologers noted that there were 12 cycles of the moon, in which the sun took to return to its original place.  However, they then noticed there were also 12 different constellations that linked the journey of the seasons throughout the year.  These were each given a name, therefore creating the star sign names we know today.  The signs of the zodiac are divided into four different sections.

Fire Signs: Aries, Sagittarius, Leo

Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Air Signs: Libra, Aquarius, Gemini

Earth Signs: Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo

The four groups are assigned to a different house on the zodiac chart.  The 12 houses are based on the earths rotation, and which months the star signs pass through.  Giving each star sign its month long dates.  The day of the month you were born, will decide which star sign category you fall in to.  Our star sign can tell us things about our personalities, our traits, and our weaknesses.  The star sign name and dates are as follows;

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

The word horoscope describes the timing of the sky, meaning time observer.  A horoscope predicts a daily/weekly/monthly or yearly observation of what is coming our way according to the stars and the planetary alignment.  Therefore they can tell you things to watch out for, good things coming your way and what you need to work on specific to your star signs personality and traits.
