What Are The Benefits Of Group Exercise?

Have you ever struggled working out on your own? Have you felt that exercising didn’t work for you? Do you find that working out alone is boring, or feel like you’re doing the same thing over and over? Then group exercise and working out in a team could be for you! Finding a workout buddy, a sports team or an exercise class can create a great support network to help you reach your fitness goals.

Well a study found that working as a team helped a group of students at the University of New England to reduce their stress levels and it improved their mental health (1). A group exercise session with others not only improves your fitness but improves your mental health as well.

Have you tried running with a group? Did you know that runners who synchronise their movements with others have a higher pain tolerance than solitary runners? It’s not just runners, another study found that people who rowed with teammates also had increased pain tolerance. Researchers believe that the enhanced pain tolerance is related to a higher release of endorphins, the "feel good" hormones resulting from people exercising in rhythm with one another. By working in a team then, you could find that it is easier for you to complete your workout and stay motivated with less pain (2). 

Another problem you may find is that repeating the same workouts can become boring, but group exercise can prevent this. The amazing fact is when you train as a group your training emphasises variation, offering a constant degree of fun while still getting in shape (3) - win win!

Group exercises classes are known to be a great way to kick your butt into gear these days. You are surrounded by others with similar goals for motivation and morale. When participating in group workout you may find it easier sticking to a fitness plan which may allow you to feel like you belong and you are part of a group! Meeting supportive people and building friendships creates an environment that can be free of judgement. Group sessions, with motivating music and energetic fitness trainers boost low energy levels, making them excellent if you need that extra encouragement to workout (3).

A group exercise instructor would be there throughout your training to help you reach your fitness goals.
